I have 5 kids, ages 10, 9, 7, 5, and 1. Whether you’re a new mom or dad, or a well-seasoned mom of 5 like me, there are always situations that come up that leave us scratching our heads. Like when the babies have their days and nights mixed up or they haven’t pooped in a few days.

One question that keeps getting me, is about night terrors and nightmares. Holy cow! My oldest had night terrors when she was very young. It was...well...terrifying. I had no idea why it was happening, or how to deal with it. I did know that stress and tiredness can contribute to them, but she was such a happy person and never gave me trouble going to sleep. She took two naps every day and had a good appetite. She was an only child at that time, so all of my attention was on her. She never needed anything for more than 5 minutes. To say the least, it was extremely confusing.

I was given an opportunity to get a copy of a new book that gives expert answers to parents’ top 150 questions. Night terrors and nightmares are covered in it. I wish I had this book back then.

Baby & Toddler Basics explains the difference between night terrors and nightmares, when to expect them and how to minimize the occurrence. The book says to try to wake them up about 15 minutes before they usually occur in order to break the cycle. I sure could have used that advice back then. I just sat with her until it passed and stayed terrified during, and for a while after it was finished. I felt horrible for her, even though she didn’t even remember it had happened.

You may have seen the author, Tanya Altmann, on the “Live with Kelly and Ryan" show on January 31st. She is a renowned, practicing pediatrician. I did see a couple of things in the book that I have different opinions on (like the section on sleeping through the night), but overall, I loved Baby & Toddler Basics.

I can’t wait to utilize the book. I have quite a few ages going on and can finally have some great answers to the questions that I’ve had for years now.

Want to check it out? The book was just released on February 6th. You can buy it on amazon
