Giving Tuesday

Posted by SuperMomSurveys on

We all know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  The deals, the lines of people waiting to get in, the rush of the whole thing.  We stand in lines for hours on end, just waiting to get inside and are rushing to find those (sometimes not so) awesome deals and hope that someone else didn't get there first.  It's selfish-ness at it's finest...greed gets to rear it's ugly head.  All for saving a few bucks while Christmas shopping.

But what about Giving Tuesday?  I know what you're thinking...What's that?

Giving Tuesday is a day to remember to give, in whatever way you can, and to teach your kids and your family members to give too.  It's special to give directly to people this Giving Tuesday.  You can also visit GiveForward, where you can donate to someone who's story touches your heart.  Maybe like Shah's Fundraiser

The Shah's have incurred $21,000 in out of pocket medical bills because their insurance refused to pay for several treatments ordered by Andrew's cancer doctors after he had already gotten the treatments.  Every little bit helps.  They've raised some money, but not enough.  It's so sad when something unforseen and unavoidable like this comes up and you don't have the means to handle on your own.

Several times a year, and especially before birthdays and holidays, our family sifts through absolutely everything in our house and finds things that are not torn up or broken, but that we haven't used in a while.  We gather those things together and post them on freecycle.org.  Freecycle is a (free) place to post things that you no longer use, but don't want to go to a landfill, and someone that could use the items will come and pick them up from your porch at a certain time and date.

We have done this for years...Since well before my kids were born.  They have grown up knowing this is a regular thing, so they know the importance of helping others out who need it.  I've also noticed that they are less materialistic than a lot of their friends.  They don't mind passing on something that is relatively new, if they no longer play with it, because they know that another child is going to love it just as much as they did.  They know they are constantly making a positive difference in the lives of other kids in our area and that makes them feel good.

The rest of the year, we have a box in the garage for things that we come across that we aren't using anymore.  Once the box is filled up, I just post the box on Freecycle as a misc. box and it's usually gone by the next day.

We've been on the receiving end as well and it's wonderful to know that there are so many people willing to help when you need it. What better day to do this sort of thing, than Giving Tuesday?

Acts of true giving take place every day on GiveForward, but Giving Tuesday is a wonderful time to reflect on how both small and large gifts make great impacts. Share your Giving Tuesday moments with us by using the hashtags #GivingTuesday and #GiveForward.

What are you doing for Giving Tuesday?

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored post, but the ideas are mine.  $10 was also donated to Shah's Fundraiser in return for this post.
