This is a sponsored post. All opinions are mine.

So you need a wig for whatever reason.  Or maybe you just love to change up your look here and there. Finding a trust-worthy company can be hard. There's so many different suppliers out there and you never know what you're going to get. Now you can rest easy and look no further, because Divatress is the leader in black hair care. They offer thousands of products and brands. They believe everyone should feel like a diva.

Their website is super easy to navigate and find exactly what you're looking for. I was looking at the Lace Front Wigs. OMG...they are gorgeous! You have so many options to add some color, shorten or lengthen your look, or even add a braid or ponytail. With so many pricing options, you're sure to find your perfect style at Divatress.

I decided to look through the lacefront wig section, because they are so popular. They usually look more natural than other options, which is important to most of us. No one wants to look like they're wearing a wig. They're ready to wear and look like it's supposed to be there. You really can't go wrong with them. Now that's what I call beauty.

New to the wig game? No problem. Just scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll find a link to the instructions. You can check out the 'About Divatress' link to so that you can learn all about the company and their mission.

I absolutely love Groupon. I also love coupons. If you’re with me on this, you are going to love the next thing I say.

Groupon Coupons! That’s right...Groupon has coupons for all your favorite places to shop, as well as savings on events and products and restaurants. This is probably the best thing I’ve heard all week.

Groupon Coupons is awesome. You can search by store or category, and it will show you all it’s great deals right away. When I clicked on stores for results, I got 81 coupons for Target, 174 for Macy’s and 177 for Kohl’s. That’s just the first three stores I looked at! I am going to be using these all the time! I spend so much money at the stores they have on this list...And now I’m going to be saving so much more! Can you imagine the savings when it’s time to shop for back to school stuff and clothes?! I am now looking forward to that time of year that I used to dread so much. My husband and I have 5 kids, (3 of which go to school), so we can definitely take advantage of some coupons for shopping!

There are far too many stores to list, but you can check them out on your computer or mobile anytime. Believe me, you won’t be disappointed with the results.

You can also check them out on Facebook and Twitter.

What are your favorite Groupon Coupons? Let me know in the comments.

GUEST POST: Picking the Right Lipstick for You

Posted by SuperMomSurveys on June 27, 2016 at 10:30 AM Comments comments (0)

Picking the Right Lipstick for You

Lavishly shaded lips have dependably been connected with sparkling great well-being. At the point when nature did not give the lips a sufficient flush actually, beauty care products gave them a little offer assistance. Lipstick stays a standout amongst the most prominent restorative choices, adding shine to an expert search and appeal for a night trip.

The most punctual monetarily accessible lipsticks were not sticks by any stretch of the imagination. Lip tints came in cakes of squeezed color and were connected with a brush. They organized on-screen characters overstate their elements to make expressions less demanding to see from the back columns, however the beauty care products were just worn in front of an audience. The films changed that, and on-screen characters who had learned subtler application systems started to wear their blushed lips off the set, making resurgence in lipstick design.

Picking an Incredible Lipstick

In spite of the fact that there is no such thing as a right lipstick, there are a lot of wrong ones. Locate an extraordinary lipstick by paying consideration on shading hints, transparency, and splendor.

Lipstick color:

At the point when looking for a lipstick, note the color hints as opposed to the essential color. Makeup specialists arrange skin tones and cosmetics tints as warm, cool, or unbiased taking into account its undercurrents. Shades with a brilliant, yellow, or orange connotation are warm; those with blue or purple are cool. A genuine fuchsia, for instance, is a cool pink since it has a little measure of blue in the blend. Poppy is a warm red since it is blended with a touch of orange.

A color should likewise suit the wearer's skin tone. When in doubt, the more prominent the difference between the skin tone and the lipstick, the more emotional and observable the lip color will be. Think about a reasonable cleaned individual in profound plum or a man with mahogany skin in a pale artful dance shoe pink to outline this idea. On the other hand, lower contrast looks less recognizable and along these lines less sensational.

Wardrobe color decisions ought to educate lipstick choices. While it is not important to coordinate a red dress to red lipstick exactly, the two shades of red ought to have comparative hints. When in doubt, combine warm shades with tans, tans, olive greens, and gold. Pick cooler lipstick shades with soul, purples, and grays.

Lipstick formula:

Lipsticks change in their haziness, completion, and composition. Search for a lipstick that suits dry, dried out lips' dampness needs and pick an emollient formula. Long-wearing recipes might be a good fit for the individuals who have a major occasion arranged; not worrying about successive touch-ups might be worth spoiling lips a while later.

Lipstick Venue:

Lipstick may not venture out any sweat to the workplace and to a supper date. Splendid, high- differentiate lipsticks pull center; this is an advantage for a cosmetics style that requires a strong mouth, yet it can occupy at a conference. To wear brighter tints for day, search for a transparent cream equation that adjusts a brilliant tone with a repressed completion.

For night, any shade of lipstick can be proper. A night out is an ideal opportunity to wear brilliant or sparkling shades. In any case, evening lips don't need to be strong. An unbiased, low- differentiate lipstick can make a successful foil for emotional eye cosmetics.

Nordstrom offers a large number of beauty products including lipstick, nail polish, skin care products etc. You can get lipstick of any color with Nordstrom online coupons by visiting the beauty section.

Save Money on Your Electricity with Energy Ogre

New Technology Slashes Electricity Bills for Texans

This is a sponsored post, but all opinions are my own.

Many Texans, myself included, are so super tired of your electricity bill running through the roof and gouging your pockets where you keep all your hard-earned money. I know this feeling all too well...with bills up to $400-$500 every month in the high months. It can be hard for the average family to keep paying these types of bills. Well, there is an alternative out there, (if you’re not in a regulated area). I was fortunate enough to be included in a sponsored post for a company called Energy Ogre.

If you live in a deregulated market in Texas (and millions do), there is a new technology company that is helping people save 40-60% off their energy bills. Sadly, this is not the case for me. I live in a regulated I don’t have any options unless I want to move to a different city. BUT...those of you who don’t live in a regulated area, are so lucky. Just keep guys are going to love me after reading this!

I know. I know. You’re skeptical. You don’t like change. You think it’s too good to be true. My husband is the biggest skeptic I know, and he’s pretty hardcore about it, but even he is open to entertaining the idea of moving. With savings this significant, it sure seems like it would be worth it.

We all know the proof is in the pudding, right? So here’s what I’d like to ask you to do...

First, take just a few minutes and use this savings calculator to learn what you could be paying based on your usage. Energy Ogre is a one-of-a-kind technology company. The technology scours the current offers in Texas and finds the best deal for you. Homeowners, apartment renters, business owners are all saving some SERIOUS money.

Important Note: Energy Ogre is NOT an energy provider and the company doesn't get paid by any energy provider for preferential treatment. They only find the best deal for the end consumer. They are a highly rated company with 5.0 reviews.

I did start the sign-up process to see how it would be for you guys. You just enter your basic information along with a little info about your electric company. I had a bill handy, so I went ahead and filled out the meter number. The second page is where you let them know some of your preferences, including whether you want to enroll in renewable (green) products. You’ll also let them know if you’re under contract with your current company, and list any providers that you would rather not work with. There are only 3 simple pages to the sign-up process. Here’s a screenshot I took of the second page:

After using the calculator and learning how much you can save, you have the option to pay Energy Ogre $10 a month to become your "administrative assistant" and make changes on your behalf. This takes the hassle out of dealing with your energy providers and you just sit back and save big money!

Check out what the press is saying about Energy Ogre!

Here are a just a few reviews that you can read on their Facebook Page:

Alisha: "My bill got up to almost $200 a month in the summer in a small one-bedroom apartment. Now my bill has never been even close to $50 a month. I am so happy and thankful for this company who helped me save some much needed money for other bills!"

Bernie: "Went with Energy Ogre 3 months ago, previously w/TXU for years @ .095 / KWH - bills ran anywhere from $160 - $300 - first three months w/ Energy Ogre - bills were Sept - $49, Oct.- $59, and Nov.-$57 - and we're an all electric house."

Adam: "Energy Ogre is the best! I got out of a contract with an early termination fee and still saved lots of money!"

"Houston-based Energy Ogre’s focus is on electricity but at its heart, this is a technology company that uses analytics to find a rate that fits their clients’ demand profile." via Houston Business Journal

Kathy: "Got my first bill after signing up with Ogre and my bill dropped from the high $200s to $85! I was in shock .. but very happy!"

The personnel behind Energy Ogre have been involved with the Texas electricity markets since well before they deregulated in 2002. This group has built power plants, scheduled fuel and electricity and even owned and managed Retail Electricity Providers in the recent past. In 2013 they decided to create Energy Ogre to help end use customers fully unlock the benefits of the deregulated electricity markets.

So, what do you think? Worth a look? I should say so. There’s a lot of potential savings at stake! After you do the savings calculator, comment and let me know what your estimated savings were...I’d love to hear the results!

GUEST POST: The Effects of Music During Pregnancy

Posted by SuperMomSurveys on August 12, 2015 at 9:55 AM Comments comments (1)

The Effects Of Music During Pregnancy

There is a great deal of child development that takes place before your child has even entered the world. By the time your unborn child is ten weeks old, they will already be moving their limbs and by the time the third trimester rolls around, the child can not only hear your voice, but also taste your food.

A number of studies have shown that exposure to music while in the womb can help the development process. It's quite convenient to get music cds and other aids at budget prices when you use 10% off coupon codes for, so it's not difficult to implement this kind of activity. However, while research has proven that children are able to hear sounds clearly during pregnancy and that the amniotic fluid is a quality sound conductor, the specific effects of music on a child during a pregnancy can be difficult to ascertain, for obvious logistical reasons.

Experts are split on the effects of music during pregnancy, with some believing that there are quantifiable long term effects, while others are opposed to the idea. Since there is no medical consensus as to whether music helps a fetus or simply serves as an annoyance, it is important to play music in a cautious manner.

The effects are most often realized when the mother is able to relax and unwind by listening to soothing, relaxing music. When the mother is able to relax, the fetus is able to, as well. The benefits that the child experiences as a result of their mother's musical choices are purely coincidental.

Another school of thought believes that a mother should rest a set of headphones directly on her stomach. This is a major misconception and there is no need to do so. You do not have to turn up the volume in order for your child to enjoy what you are listening to. Music that is played at normal volume on a stereo can be heard just as easily.

If you are going to play music for your child during pregnancy, the best choice is classical. The range of notes used in most classical music can be arranged in a manner that resembles a lullaby, which will soothe the child. Any music that is harsh or excessively aggressive, including heavy metal and hardcore rap, should be avoided, as they are not soothing to an unborn child.

The last thing a mother wants to do is startle her baby. While there is very little evidence to suggest that music has a strong effect during pregnancy, a mother's relaxation and comfort is incredibly important to the child's development. So, even if the child is not experiencing any direct effects as a result of listening to music during pregnancy, they are able to reap the benefits of a happy and healthy mother.

The Briefcase

Posted by SuperMomSurveys on May 25, 2015 at 1:45 AM Comments comments (0)

I was given the opportunity to watch, and review, the pilot episode of CBS’s The Briefcase. Let me tell you a little bit about it first. As stated in the CBS Press Release:

The Briefcase features hard-working American families experiencing financial setbacks who are presented with a briefcase containing a large sum of money and a potentially life-altering decision: they can keep all of the money for themselves, or give all or part of it to another family in need.

I had no idea what to expect, but it was great. I love these kinds of shows...kind of in the reality style of Wife Swap (in my opinion). You get to know both families involved and you grow with them as they realize and understand new things. I experienced it all: love, hate and everything in between.

There are two families, each of which are given a briefcase with $101,000 in it. After they get all excited about it, they are told that they will have to make an important decision concerning the money over the 72 hours that follow. The decision will be whether to keep all the money, or give all or some to another family that is struggling as much (or more) than they are. Before they are to start making that choice, they are to spend the $1,000 on anything they want that day.

Knowing myself, I probably would’ve just put that money toward some bills, so that I wouldn’t have to worry about it the next month. That’s enough to pay my rent and my utility bill for a month!

So after they wake up the next morning, they start trying to decide what they will do with the money. They find out that they will get texts telling them about the other family that they will decide whether or not to help. Both families are going through the same thing, at the same time it seems. They get the first text. It instructs one person from each couple to go to the bank and decide how much they want to keep, which is not final. After they justify the choice they made to their spouse, another text arrives. This one gives a little information about the other family: names, ages, incomes, debt amount, and a little bio of sorts that explains kind of how they are struggling. I should probably mention that the other couple has no idea that both families got the briefcase. They each think that they are the only ones with that kind of money.

The next day, the text received instructs the other spouse to go to the bank and make their own decision about what they should do with the money. They can keep it how it is or make any changes they want. Again, it’s time to explain the decision to the spouse. The next bit of info they get is that they will be visiting the other families home to look around. They can look anywhere they like and the other family is not there. Once they’re finished with the visit, they are to fly over to meet the other family and give them whatever amount of money they decide to give to help. That’s when both families find out that they have been going through the same process.

For some reason, it won't let me post a video on this page of my site, but you can go to to watch a preview.

I won’t give any specifics...I know most people hate spoilers...Let’s just say that it’s so interesting to watch people and their decision-making process. I find myself talking to the screen, telling them what to do and fussing at them when they make me hate them for a minute. The Briefcase is a tear-jerker, to say the least. I can’t wait to see the other episodes!

Time for your two cents:

What would you do with the $100,000? What would you do with the $1,000 at the beginning? Let me know in the comments...I’m so curious!

Disclosure: This was a sponsored post, but all opinions are my own. - Price Comparison Made Easy

Posted by SuperMomSurveys on May 22, 2015 at 5:40 PM Comments comments (0)

I received the opportunity to try out and review my experience using Their website provides a free local price match list to be used at Walmart. I’m always down with new ways to save a buck, so naturally, I was excited to see how much I would save. Honestly, I expected to save somewhere in the neighborhood of about $5 or so.

The first thing I did after checking out the website, was try to figure out what products I was going to buy. I use coupons regularly, but I typically don’t take the time to put together sales ads with coupons. It just takes too long, in my opinion, and I can never seem to get the same kinds of results that other people are able to get.

Then I saw it. Something clicked and I suddenly realized that some of the items listed had “coupon alert” next to the sale price. Now, I was getting somewhere. If they were making it that easy for me to put 2 and 2 together, I may as well give it a try. I scanned through the items that were marked with coupons to find the things that I needed.

I decided on these things:

  • Pampers Jumbo Pack 18-37 ct. with a sale price of $8.99 at Kroger
  • Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner 24 oz. with a sale price of $1.99 at Kroger
  • Purex Detergent 122-150 oz. with a sale price of $5.99 at Kroger

I made my list, deciding to get two of each product. With seven people in the house, 2 of which are in diapers, it can only help to have back-up products. I clicked on the link to print out my limit of 2 for each coupon, except for the Purex. Here’s the coupons I printed:

  • Pampers Baby Dry, Jumbo Pack - $1.50 off
  • Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner - 75 cents off
  • Purex Detergent - $3 off when you buy two bottles

My last step was to make notes on the paper I printed out (from the screenshot I took) from the site, so that I wouldn’t lose track of what I was doing. Walmart has a tendency to distract me.

Here’s how my shopping trip worked out (with totals).

Prices at Walmart:

Pampers - 28 ct. - $9.98 x 2 = $19.96

Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner - $2.98 x 2 = $5.96

Purex - 150 oz. - $6.98 x 2 = $13.96

Total = $39.88

Sale Prices using

Pampers - $8.99 x 2 = $17.98

Lysol - $1.99 x 2 = $3.98

Purex - $5.99 x 2 = $11.98

Total = $33.94

Total Coupon Savings = $7.50

Grand Total (after savings) = $26.44

Total Savings using PriceMatcherz = $13.44

Needless to say, this worked out much better than I could have hoped for, and I am one happy camper. That $13.44 that I saved from my shopping trip, using the easiest price comparison process I have ever attempted, can now buy an extra bag of diapers and another box of wipes. Excellent! I can’t ignore results like that. I will definitely be doing this with every shopping trip from this day forward.

Time to give your two cents:

How much do you typically save with your current methods?

Challenge time:

Try and let me know how it worked out for you. Was it easier and quicker than what you do now? How much did you save?

Hosted By Tammie's Reviews, Giveaways and More, Queen of Reviews and Elite Mama.

Sponsored By Balance Bar

According to a recent survey by Balance Bar, 43% of Americans feel most balanced during the summer! As we’re approaching June 21st, it’s the perfect time to get outside, enjoy the beautiful weather and start feeling more balanced.

  • Make it your own: There is not one right way to get it done. There is the right way that works for you. When it comes to eating healthy, find the foods you like and implement those into your daily diet. The same goes for exercise. If you hate the gym then find something outside that is manageable for you. This is not about torture; this is about creating a lifestyle that you can do week after week.
  • Watch the calendar: Use summer for motivation to shape up but don’t wait for June 21st. If you wait until summer actually starts, you’ll feel rushed and end up crash dieting or doing a crazy workout schedule. I personally like to keep a calendar in my kitchen and cross off the days as I countdown to bikini weather. The visual reminder – right where you eat – is helpful in keeping you on track.
  • Sign up a friend: We tend to be more successful at accomplishing some type of exercise if we have an accountability partner. Solicit a friend and maybe use this as your time to connect. You can train for a 5k together or join an outdoor boot camp; there are a lot more options now that the weather is improving.
  • Plan to snack: Take snacks (like fruit, nuts or a Balance Bar®;) wherever you go to prevent mindless eating. If I have an afternoon or early evening workout planned, I make sure to have one of these handy an hour or so before so that I have plenty of energy to get in a good workout.
  • Variety is key: Make as many meals as you can at home so you can control your nutrition. These are some of my Balance Bar,– fresh and full of veggies for springtime! To keep things interesting and fresh at my house, I try to rotate foods. One night I may go for something heavier with veggies and grains, and then the next night focus on proteins. I really try to change up the food and create a great deal of variety.
  • Each day is a new chance and it's never too late: If you fall out of your summer shape up routine one day, don’t sweat it. Forgive yourself and move on – and just keep moving! To see some of Gabby’s favorite fitness moves, go to Balance Bar and for more of Gabby’s tips for balancing fitness and a busy schedule go to Balance Bar

This has got to be one of the best giveaways going on right now.  What a great way to start working toward a new fit you.  I would absolutely love to win this prize!  Good luck guys!

Am I the Only One That Reads School Policy?

Posted by SuperMomSurveys on April 28, 2015 at 9:55 AM Comments comments (0)

I know you've probably seen all of the "my kid got sent home from school because of her clothes" stories that have been everywhere lately.  I've been seeing them and reading them.  I know you have been too.  You may even be like, "That is so unfair", or maybe you agree with the ones that say, "Teach the boys to not look at girls that way".

Now, I don't usually do this sort of thing on my site, but I have to say something.  I've been biting my tongue long enough.

The fact is, those kids (most of the time) should have been sent home because of their clothes.  There have been a very small handful of the stories that I couldn't find anything wrong with the outfits...particularly the prom dresses.  That said, the rest were very clearly in violation of the school's dress code.  School policy doesn't change just because you think the outfit is cute, or that your child wears it well and you think it's "tasteful", or if you're one of those that think rules change when it comes to your kid.

Rules, for the most part, are made simply because people have given them a reason to be put into place.  That should be what the discussion is about, not the clothes and how you think it's unfair that you allowed your kid to break the rules by wearing something that's against policy and they got caught.  I know what probably just popped up in your head when I said that...Maybe something along the lines of "Other girls break the rules all the time".  I'm reminded of the times my mother has asked me if I would jump off of a bridge if that's what everyone else is doing.  The answer?  No, of course I wouldn't...and you shouldn't either.  It takes some kind of ego and self-righteousness and sense of entitlement to think that you could do something, that's so clearly spelled out as NOT okay, and fight against it when you get caught and have to suffer the consequences.

Actions have consequences.  I learned that pretty early on in life, (thanks Momma).  I also learned that the world does not revolve around me.  That's some very grounding and important lessons to be taught.  They help you to be a little humble and treat other people with respect.  To be a productive member of society.  Once you learn that you are not the center of the universe and that something will happen because of everything you do, (whether good or bad), you learn to make better decisions.  That's called life.   The better your decisions, the better quality of life.  Newflash:  Drama is NOT essential to life.

The whole reason this is coming up is because of all those stories around for a while now.  The latest one being the little girl having to wear a tshirt over her dress and jeans underneath, because of her spaghetti strap sundress.  It just made me so mad to think that there are those people out there that think they need to be in the spotlight because they got told that the rules do, in fact, apply to them.  I don't know about yours, but my kids' school handbook CLEARLY states that spaghetti straps are NOT allowed.  Not only that, but if your child wears a dress or skirt, they have to wear shorts underneath.  I don't understand where the debate comes in.  I mean, would you rather they call you to bring a change of clothes for her, or just give her something to fix the problem.  I know the parents at our school don't like their day interrupted for something so trivial, unless it's a request from their kid.  When something like that happens at our school, they get sent to the nurse to see if there are extra clothes they can put on.  If not, then they call the parents. Of course, we are also instructed to have a change of clothes in the kids' backpacks for accidents and situations like this.  Something of their own that they can wear if they need to change for whatever reason.  I know that our school nurse's office has a limited supply of extra clothes for kids to wear.  I'm sure if they had shorts and one of those cute little half top thing that covers the shoulders and ties in front, they would have done that instead of the tshirt and jeans.  They are not here to humiliate your child...they're just here to be there for your kids and fix problems when they come up.  When the rules are followed correctly, situations like this just don't occur easily.

The other story that was what pushed me into ranting on my site is this one:

She has pink in her hair to remember her grandmother, who died of breast cancer, and for her cousin, who is having surgery because of it.  While the reasoning is noble, it is still against the rules.  The rules don't change because you think your reason is good enough to get around it.  Now, don't bite my head off over this one.  I support breast cancer by wearing pink...things like that.   All I'm saying, is why couldn't she dress in pink, from head to toe?  Wear the pink ribbon?  Hell, if they really want to give support, how about not being lazy about it and get together with the school's principle and maybe organizing some sort of fundraiser that supports a foundation for breast cancer, or even just a certain day where everyone wears something pink, (even as simple as a ribbon), to help support it. Or maybe a race between the kids at school for it?  My kids' school does that every year.

I just think that people have become way more, "It's all about me", when it should be, "We're in this together" or "Let's work together to make a better world".

What do you think?

Review: The Dovekeepers

The Dovekeepers

I was sent a free copy of The Dovekeepers book and DVD to review.  I have to be honest here...I didn't think I was going to be able to get into this one.  The summary did not do it justice, in my opinion.  I started to read and by the third page of the book, I couldn't put it down.  I flew through it!  The story grabbed me.  It progresses quickly, but I didn't feel like it left anything out.

I waited til I finished reading the book to watch the DVD.  I am so glad I did!  It was great and follows the book wonderfully, but I love that I felt like I knew all the characters as they made their appearance on-screen.  I also think they did a wonderful job of casting the characters.  The faces, for the most part, matched what I had imagined for them.

Here's the summary of the book:

Cote de Pablo, Rachel Brosnahan, Kathryn Prescott, Diego Boneta and Sam Neill Star

Based on Alice Hoffman’s Bestselling Historical Novel About a Group of Extraordinary Women Whose Lives Intersect In a Fight for Survival at the Siege of Masada in 70 C.E.

CBS today announced THE DOVEKEEPERS, a four-hour limited event series from executive producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett, will be broadcast Tuesday, March 31 and Wednesday, April 1, 2015 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT).

The project stars Cote de Pablo, Rachel Brosnahan and Kathryn Prescott in the title dovekeeper roles, Sam Neill as first-century Jewish scholar and historian Josephus, and Diego Boneta as a star warrior of the Jewish army at Masada. The series is based on Alice Hoffman’s bestselling, critically acclaimed historical novel about a group of extraordinary women whose lives intersect in a fight for survival at the siege of Masada.

Set in ancient Israel, THE DOVEKEEPERS is based on the true events at Masada in 70 C.E. After being forced out of their home in Jerusalem by the Romans, 900 Jews were ensconced in a fortress at Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. Besieged at Masada, the Jews held out for months against the vast Roman armies. The project will recount the events from the perspective of a few extraordinary women who arrive at Masada with unique backstories, but a common bond for survival. Additionally, these women, who work together daily as dovekeepers, are all concealing substantial secrets.

Hoffman’s novel was published in 2011 by Scribner, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, earning the New York Times’ bestseller status and widespread critical acclaim, including being hailed by Nobel laureate Toni Morrison as “a major contribution to 21st century literature.”

THE DOVEKEEPERS will be brought to television from executive producers Roma Downey and multiple Emmy Award winner Mark Burnett (SURVIVOR, “The Voice”;), the production team behind the Emmy-nominated 10-hour miniseries “The Bible,” which scored big ratings for the History Channel in March 2013, and the feature “Son of God.”

Frank Siracusa, John Weber and Yves Simoneau also serve as executive producers, with Simoneau directing. Ann Peacock adapted the novel for the screen.

THE DOVEKEEPERS is the first project from CBS Entertainment and CBS Television Studios’ Limited Series and Event Programming unit. It is a co-production between CBS Television Studios and LightWorkers Media, a division of United Artists Media Group.

I know what you're thinking...That's a pretty descriptive and in-depth description, right?

Yes, but I promise, it doesn't do it justice.  It doesn't give any indication to the mood that is set once you start reading.  There's a reason The Dovekeepers is a best-seller.

Review: Raising Kids to Thrive: Balancing Love With Expectations and Protection With Trust

Raising Kids to Thrive: Balancing Love With Expectations and Protection With Trust

I received a free copy of Raising Kids to Thrive: Balancing Love With Expectations and Protection With Trust to enjoy and review.  I don't usually go for these kinds of books, but I have to say that I did like this one.  I started reading this the same afternoon that I got it in the mail.  I read while I was waiting for the kids to get out of school and I just flew through it.  I was finished with it in about 3 days of 20-minute sessions.  If you're like me, you have a ton of these types of books, but you can't really agree with most of the things said in a lot of them.

I didn't find that to be the case with this one.  I did actually finish reading it and I truly enjoyed reading it...and agreed with the majority of it.  Now that's saying something for me.  This book focuses on being a "lighthouse parent", which basically means that you are there to offer stability and guidance for your kids so that they can have the freedom to make their own decisions.

All throughout the book are quotes, from a variety of teenagers, that tell what they want their parents to do and say.  I was surprised at some of them.  They seemed so mature and genuine.

The basic things this book helps with are:

  • Loving our kids unconditionally yet still hold high expectations for them; when love feels conditional (when parental affection is solely shown in response to grades, performance, or behaviors) kids experience an ever-present sense of pressure.
  • Accept that our children (and adults) are “uneven" kids: the importance of expecting growth and not perfection from our children.
  • Holding our kids to high moral standards, while also being a role model for those standards.
  • Recognizing and coping with stress.
  • When to set boundaries and when to get out of kids’ way: how to set clear expectations about risky behaviors
  • How to start meaningful conversations with our children by becoming a sounding board and not necessarily a dictator
  • Reduce anxiety – for themselves and their kids – as they venture out on their own and move into adulthood

The author, Kenneth R. Ginsburg, M.D., M.S. Ed, FAAP, is great too.  His writing makes me feel like I'm having coffee over the kitchen table. I love that.  That's the sort of books I tend to get into the most.  Here's some info on him:

In his latest book -- Raising Kids to Thrive: Balancing Love With Expectations and Protection With Trust (American Academy of Pediatrics, March 24, 2015) -- best-selling author, pediatrician and resilience expert, Kenneth R. He gently helps parents understand how they can meet the challenge to balance unconditional love, yet still hold high expectations for their children. How to Prevent Impulse Shopping

How to prevent impulse shopping

During a recent girls night the subject of shopping, of course, came up. But thanks to all of us being somewhat budget constrained it was actually a conversation about how we AVOID shopping, or rather how we avoid overspending while shopping. After the girls headed home I realized that no matter who you are or how tight your budget, overspending is a sin that we are ALL guilty of. I read a few posts on where I can always find some good advice on the matter and made a list of the tricks all of us have used to prevent our impulse shopping.

1. Never go into a store when you are hungry – EVER

Seriously, it doesn’t even matter WHAT you are going to the store to buy. When you are hungry, your resistance to overspending is practically nonexistent! Rather grab something to eat first, just enough to fill the hole and you’ll find that impulse buying is a lot easier to control.

2. Make a list of EXACTLY what you need and stick to it

Keep a running list of things that have been finished during the week/month. The day before you actually do your shopping go through every cupboard or draw and add the things that are running low. You can even add your wish list items – like that delicious ice cream they’ve been advertising all week!

3. Buy groceries according to a ‘menu’

Instead of just buying things and then having to plan meals around what you have – rather plan your meals in advance. First I check what I still have available, then I plan meals around it. Got a whole box of cereal – make sure you have enough milk, got potatoes – buy ground beef and make homemade burgers and fries!

4. Plan how much you have to spend and how you are going to make payment beforehand

First you need to evaluate – are you a person who spends cash frivolously and finds it difficult to swipe a card or are you more likely to hang onto cash and swipe a card. Whichever one you find more difficult to do – that’s the one you use! I personally like prepaid credit cards – I load exactly so much on it and once that’s finished – well you get it!

5. Plan your shopping trip

Now it’s time to pull out those coupons you’ve collected and check them against the items on your list. If there’s an item on your list that you don’t have a coupon for then check online to see if you can’t find one there. As much as possible try to stick to a single store for all your shopping – if there are similar deals from different stores, use the coupon from the store where you can get most of, if not all the rest of the items on your list as well.

Put all the coupons that you are going to be using for this shopping trip into its own envelope, along with the card or cash you’ve set aside and then you’re ready to go. One last word of advice that I found on Discountrue some time ago, and which turned out to be a savior for me countless times – as difficult as it is, avoid even LOOKING at the product displays by the checkouts! They are traps designed to promote impulse buys but you are stronger than them!!!
